Hot topics

ICANN deals with a wide range of topics: some that affect individual Internet users; some that affect business; some government; some only the companies that build and run the Internet's infrastructure. Most however directly affect at least one group.

For this reason, we have separated up ICANN's work into issues so individuals of any type can quickly review what is going on with a particular subject. Each topic has its own webpage which are linked to below (just click through) which briefly and simply cover the issue, explain what it is and why it is important.

Each page will also provide resources on the issue plus the latest news and information on that topic.

If you have any queries or questions, please do add them as comments to an individual webpage and we will see what we can do to help.

Good domain names do that--they give the public an idea of what they will find at your site, and if they are the same as your company's name or brand, they make it easier to find your Web site on the Internet. slabire

I want to buy a domain name

I want to buy a domain name owned by a russian company and the registrar is also russian. This situation makes more difficult the communication between us. Since I do not have experience in buying or transfering domain names, I would like to know if there are certain matters that we should take into consideration while making the agreement of sale, like certain ICANN policies or reccomendations for this kind of transactions.

Domain Transfer

ICANN is not responsible for a 'usual' Domain Transfer, like the one you decribed. If you never have dealt with a domain transfer and/or you want some form/kind of 'security' with that, then you should go to one of the big marketplaces for buying and selling domain names and websites. I don't want to make advertising here, but you will find the bigger ones easily ;). Such specialised companies are able to help you with e.g. the domain sales contract and with a secure Escrow Service, in order to protect yourself from fraud or technical errors etc.

Rampant squatting

I'm an attorney in the USA and many of my clients face the problem of blatant squatting on domain names they would like to register. The squatters put up the generic link-pages with advertisements that we have all seen. It would be understandable if someone was actually using the domain for something legitimate, but 99% of the time it is blatant squatting.

Two questions:

1) It seems that the only real solution is the expensive and time-consuming UDRP process to attempt to get the domain.
Is there any other option for those who can't afford to spend thousands on UDRP?

2) What is ICANN doing to combat this massive problem?
Squatting has been rampant since the inception of the internet.. it seems like nothing is being done.

Squatting

I would also like to know more about what is being done to stop domain squatters. Does anyone know if there is somewhere to report this abuse? You should not have to pay massive legal fees or pay a huge premium to obtain a domain name that is rightfully yours.

I guess..

we won't be getting any answer from ICANN.

No More WDPRS Follow-Ups?

I have not received a 45-day WDPRS follow-up since 20-Jan-2008, even though I have filed WDPRS reports almost daily for the past several months. Has ICANN discontinued WDPRS follow-ups?

I have emailed the webmaster a few times about this matter, but as with all emails to the webmaster on any subject, I have never received a reply.
